Special provisions for carcinogens in the COSHH Regulations 1994 relate to materials carrying R49 - May Cause Cancer by inhalation.

HAZARDS IDENTIFICATION

 The product is strongly acidic and corrosive.  It will cause chemical burns to human tissue, and may cause cancer by inhalation.

 STABILITY AND REACTIVITY

Stable.  Incompatible with easily oxidizable materials including cotton or paper (may ignite) and also incompatible with strong alkalis.  Hazardous decomposition products are:  oxides of phosphorous / mist of chromic acid

HANDLING AND STORAGE

Avoid contact with skin and eyes. 

Take care to avoid splashing.

Keep containers closed.

Handle only when wearing full protective clothing.

Local exhaust ventilation may be necessary under certain conditions.


EXPOSURE CONTROLS/PERSONAL PROTECTION

Eye Protection    : Face shield

Skin Protection   : PVC or nitrile rubber gloves, overalls and boots.

Respiratory Protection : Not normally required, but the need should be

                                assessed under the conditions of use.

Ventilation            : The product is normally used as a dilute, aqueous

                                solution and normal room ventilation is sufficient.

                                Under certain conditions of heat or spray, local

                                exhaust may be necessary.

FIRST AID MEASURES

Inhalation            : Remove from exposure and obtain medical attention.

 Skin Contact        : Drench the affected area with water. Remove

                                   contaminated clothing and continue treatment for at

                                   least 15 minutes. Seek medical advice.

 Ingestion              : Contact local poison control centre or doctor

                                   immediately. 

Eye Contact         : Irrigate immediately with clean water for at least

                                  15 minutes.  Seek medical attention.

FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES

 Will not burn nor support combustion.

ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES

Wear full protective clothing.  Do not allow to enter drains.

Neutralize the spill with lime, and soak up into inert inorganic granules. 

Transfer to closed polythene bins for safe disposal.

Contact of the concentrated solution with wood, paper or other combustible materials must be avoided.

DISPOSAL CONSIDERATIONS

Disposal should be by Authorised effluent disposal contractors and it should be made clear that the product is acidic and contains Chromic Acid.  All Statutory Regulations must be complied with.

 Chromium compounds can, on long term exposure, cause bronchitis, skin sensitisation, kidney and liver damage, and may cause cancer by inhalation.

The product contains chromium compounds and should not be allowed to enter drains.
